The check, by the Monroe Police Department and the state Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services, checked 16 establishments on Monday, May 6,  in an effort enforce state law regarding the sale of tobacco products to youth under the age of eighteen, said Lt. Stephen Corrone.

During the inspection, clerks at the Camaro Mini Mart at 487 Monroe Turnpike and the Mobil Gas Station at 405 Monroe Turnpike were found in violation, Corrone said.

The offending clerks received a $200 fine, police said.

The cigarette dealer license holder at each establishment also faces additional administrative sanctions from the Department of Revenue Services, the state agency that issues cigarette dealer licenses.
